Dr Efstathios Gonos

Director of Research, National Hellenic Research Foundation

Efstathios Gonos graduated from the Department of Pharmacy, University of Athens, obtained his PhD at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Glasgow, UK, and holds a Docent in Biomedicine from Orebro University Medical School, Sweden.

He worked at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research / University College London and has served as General Director of the Hellenic Pasteur Institute. He is Director of Research at the Institute of Chemical Biology of the National Hellenic Research Foundation. His research focuses on the genetic and environmental factors linked to human ageing and longevity. He has published more than 150 research articles, is the author of 14 monographs, and holds patents that have resulted in the development of novel anti-ageing products.

He has served as a Senior Expert of the EU on Human Development and the Ageing Process and as Deputy National Representative of Greece to the EU on Genomics and Biotechnology for Health. He is a past member of the Executive Committee of IUBMB, the Advanced Course Committee of FEBS and the Board of the Society for Free Radical Research-Europe, and is currently a Board member of the European Society of Anti-Aging Medicine. He is Editor-in-Chief of Mechanisms of Ageing and Development and of IUBMB Life, and an editorial board member of Experimental Gerontology, Free Radical Research, Ageing Research Reviews and Antioxidants.
