Dimitrios Kouvelas is Professor of Clinical Pharmacology and Director of the Laboratory of Clinical Pharmacology at the Department of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He studied Medicine and Pharmacy at AUTh, completed a PhD in Neuropharmacology, and is a specialist in General and Family Medicine with further specialisation in Clinical Pharmacology, having trained in Austria and Germany in psycho/neuropharmacology, rational prescribing and clinical trial design.

He collaborates in research, clinical practice and teaching with institutions including the Karolinska Institute, the Max Planck Institutes, the Universities of Innsbruck, Dundee, Belgrade and Kragujevac, universities in Istanbul, and the Institut Pasteur in France. His current interests focus on rational prescribing, evidence-based pharmacotherapy, pharmacoepidemiology and risk assessment of therapeutic interventions, with emphasis on training specialised clinical pharmacologists, educating young physicians, patient education and public awareness, and establishing standards for rigorous scientific interaction with the pharmaceutical industry.

He is a member of the Education Committee of the European Association for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics and former Greek representative to the UEMS for the specialty of Clinical Pharmacology. He represented Greece on the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency (2014-2017), and has served as President of the Positive List Committee and of the Health Technology Assessment Committee of the Ministry of Health, Vice-President of the Negotiation Committee of EOPYY, and President of the Non-Prescription Medicines and Medicines Shortages Committees of EOF. He is the author of numerous scientific publications and several books.
