Theodoros Vasilakopoulos is Professor of Pulmonology and Intensive Care at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Adjunct Professor at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He obtained his medical degree and PhD from NKUA, completed postgraduate training at Boston University, and carried out postdoctoral studies at the Laboratoire de Physiopathologie Respiratoire, Aix-Marseille University, and in the Critical Care Division of the Royal Victoria Hospital and the Meakins-Christie Laboratories at McGill University.

He is Director of the Third University Intensive Care Clinic of the University of Athens at Eugenideio Hospital and Consultant Pulmonologist at Laiko General Hospital, having previously been Head of the Intensive Care and Pulmonology Units of the First University Intensive Care Clinic at Evangelismos Hospital. His research focuses on ventilator weaning and on the effects of increased airway resistance and bronchospasm, observed in severe
exacerbations of COPD and asthma, on the lung, diaphragm and respiratory centres, in both
experimental animal models and humans.

He has served as Chair of the Long Range Planning Committee and of the Acute Critical Care Group of the Respiratory Intensive Care Assembly of the European Respiratory Society, and as a member of the Critical Care Assembly of the American Thoracic Society. He reviews for more than 30 international journals and has served on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine, where he was Associate Editor. He is currently Associate Editor of the International Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and the Canadian Respiratory Journal, and has served on the National Council for Research and Technology and as Special and General Secretary of the Hellenic Thoracic Society.
